C’mon. Man or woman, you know there is something about the hot card that turns your head and makes you stare. You walk your eyes up the headlights or taillights, passed the curves of the metal and typically pass a peak into the interior. There’s just something about a well-made vehicle that forces you to stare. Nothing wrong with that.
The dream car showed up in print ads in the 30s and 40s and in the 50s and 60s they began to dominate television commercials. Music videos, picture books, graphic novels, etc. have all tried to capture the allure that is the American and foreign automobile in its varying levels of sophistication.
In the past 15 years, innovation and ingenutiy have marked the changes in today’s vehicles – adaptive headlights, laser cruise control, entertainment systems to rival home systems, and creature comforts that can be found only at top hotels. To many, with the aid of Bluetooth and their mobile phone, there may be no reason to go home.
After years of the muscle car drawing the biggest looks, now comes the down-sized hybrids and the electric cars and some of them are pretty hot. In fact, it’s expected that we will now begin to see the hybrid muscle car – as witnessed by both Honda and Lexus’ entries into the market.
But it won’t stop there. Charging stations for electric cards are taking on a distinctive look and may very well revolutionize the American landscape. Where once stood gas stations with large convenience stores, it’s possible that we may now – in the next 10-15 years – be looking at parking lots serving the self-service responsibility of charging stations.
There’s a huge change about to descend upon us in both the physical and mental landscape that we know today and it should make for some interesting writing and images. We hope to capture all of the newness that this industry is about to bring to us, while keeping an eye to the present and past.
We invite your comments as well as any writing or photos you are interested in passing our way.
